I thought it would be good to have an easy-to-access page that explains who I am and what I'm doing.
My name is Abbie Caple and I'm from Ohio. I've been passionate about orphan care for several years now. It started when I learned about the deplorable condition of kids with special needs in orphanages in Eastern Europe. I ended up making several trips to Bulgaria with friends on their referral visits for their adoptions. You can read about those trips here:
After I came back from Bulgaria in June, I was looking for a job and didn't really know what I was doing next in life. A friend of friend of a friend (the original friend was someone I met online, the friend I first went to Bulgaria with - talk about crazy!) posted a link on Facebook, talking about how Muphamuzi Baby Home in South Africa was in need of interns.
I'd been wanting to go to Africa, but it was always "someday" off in the future. It would be for a year, and I would do this or that specific thing, and it would be someplace like Kenya or Uganda, not South Africa. But when this opportunity came, I just knew it was something I really wanted to do! So I applied, and was accepted to intern from January-May 2014.
It all went downhill from there. =) It was only about two months in before I decided there was NO way I could leave after only five months! I extended my stay until the end of August, but that didn't last long and I ended up planning to stay until November. Still, I was dreading November! The members from our church and workers at the baby home had become family to me, and I was living out my passion - to care for orphans. Here's a blog post that gives an example of what one of my busier days looked like!
So, I was delighted to find out that there was a chance for me to return as a caregiver! I committed to a year, stayed a little longer, and...well, I'm still here and don't plan on leaving anytime in the foreseeable future! I have been incredibly blessed that God has allowed me to care for these little ones - it's been an incredible opportunity and I love it so much!
